How the Mobile Healthcare App Monitor Patients efficiently without staying at Hospitals?

Mobile Patient Monitoring Apps are the hottest trends in the healthcare industry today. Recently a research institute accredited with 'A' certificate by The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has developed a remote patient monitoring mobile app system, conducting a thorough research on the utilities & functionalities of the mobile app & the possibilities of how effective it could be for remote monitoring of high-risk level or low-risk level patients. The vision over this research is to build an app that integrates seamlessly with the advanced electronic healthcare equipment and can further be used to gather patient’s medical information in a timely manner. The information should be sent to the remote locations for a live and analytical monitoring by doctors & caregivers. The research was conducted by Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham.

Wondering how a Mobile App can be used for monitoring patient more efficiently & effectively than a doctor. The complete process is explained in this blog.

Remote Patient Monitoring App- Objective & Result Achieved

The research was carried out with the objective to develop a mobile healthcare application that can collect data from the advanced electronic devices and upload the most important information on the server. This information is used by hospitals to monitor the health status of the patient using a UI developed language of Android & iOS application.

This specially designed app offers a better way to monitor patients at the comfort of home where the expenses are way less as compared to staying in the hospitals. Continue reading for a clear working mechanism of this app.

How is the Remote Patient Monitoring Mobile App Works?

The Patient Monitoring App works on the mechanism of collecting sensor data from heterogeneous wearable sensors and then processing the collected data that is further used to analyze the patient status and accordingly trigger the warning messages to the respective doctors & caretakers etc. In case, there is an emergency or any situation that needs your attention. The App has the capability to flash the warning signals on the doctor’s mobile. Here, the factors like risk levels of the patients are also taken into account & involve the doctors accordingly. This involvement of the doctors will help to make this process more accurate and acceptable for health monitoring. The complete system is also seeking possibilities of developing dynamic algorithms for reduced power consumption during real-time continuous monitoring of the patients.

The collected sensor data is further used to monitor the basic vital parameters of the patients such as ECG using Bluetooth Technology which is measured from the wireless body sensors to the patient's Smartphone. The collected data should be buffered temporarily in the mobile itself, & saved in the SQLite database. The data is then analyzed (in the phone itself) to suggest & find the warning level. If the result comes above a threshold, a warning message should be sent to the doctors and caretakers. These warning messages will be transmitted to the central database situated in the hospital. If in case, the doctor needs to see the patients ECG Signal in his or her phone, the system sends back the ECG report in his or her Smartphone. So no matter where the user is, she or he can view the needed data in their mobile device only.

How the Mobile Healthcare App Monitor Patients efficiently without staying at Hospitals?

Other than the healthcare-related measures, there are other functionalities and applications in the app that keeps running in Smartphone consuming extra energy. It is to be noted that the data is processed according to the type of patient being on high risk or low risk. For patients with high risk, the data flow from the sensor more frequently than patients with low risk. Also, for the low-risk patients, the data will be transmitted to the central database server if the memory goes out of storage or when there is the reception of a warning message. In the same way, for high-risk patients, the Energy consumption will change based on the energy required to transmit the data to the central database server and to transmit the warning message.

Is Patient Monitoring Mobile App Reliable? Pros & Cons Explained

Pros: There are many benefits of remote patient monitoring mobile apps for the patients as well for doctors, some of them being—

  • Mobile Healthcare apps offer better access to healthcare services.
  • For patients, these apps cost away lower than staying at hospitals. On the other side, they offer higher efficiency, for healthcare providers.
  • Mobile being a portable device, allows patients to track their health more effectively & easily. Dealing with large & complex medical equipment is not easy for patients. A mobile app can monitor health conditions all the time without fail.
  • It is multifunctional i.e. keep tracking all health conditions simultaneously at the same time. The timely information and suggestions are forwarded to stabilize any health condition of the patient.
  • It ensures & makes the patient’s and their family members feel comfortable knowing that they are being monitored and will be supported if a problem arises.
  • Multiple doctors can evaluate the condition from remote locations.
  • Increase operational efficiency, planning & compliance for doctors.
  • Reduces the workload, clinical productivity solution for doctors.
  • Save Time & Resources for healthcare providers.

Cons: Though there are many pros of choosing a mobile health monitoring app over traditional methods of staying at hospitals yet there are cons too, as explained below:

  • There are no clear guidelines to the clinical staff for managing the health alerts of a patient unless it’s urgency. The lack of a dedicated team of healthcare providers can act as a con.
  • Although technology is introduced to almost every sector, it can become a barrier to some healthcare providers that are not technological.
  • The healthcare apps may not be accessible for everyone especially for small healthcare institutions and rural hospitals where the internet connectivity is not so advanced.
  • It is to be noted that not everyone owns a Smartphone, and elderly people often face difficulties in using modern gadgets, such as mobile phones.

Remote Patient Monitoring Application - What to Conclude?

As can be seen, a Health monitoring system (mHealth App) is an efficient tool that can save human lives providing lots of benefits for the healthcare industry, particularly for both patients and doctors. Health App Developers should ensure that healthcare mobile apps are fully configurable and are developed to the patient’s particular needs and requirements, making it useful and cost-effective for both hospitals and domestic use. The best healthcare apps may also offer solutions to decrease the number of steps involved in sustaining their health level.

For healthcare provider industries today, it’s high time to realize the benefits of digital healthcare strategy. A mobile app makes it much easier for patients to follow protocols, such as what medicines to take, foods to avoid, and physical activities to continue.
